Is the interview for partner job similar to an associate role?
Not really… and that’s because of the difference between the roles within a law firm. Associate interviews tend to focus on the candidate’s legal knowledge, experience and cultural fit while partner interviews emphasise the challenges of leadership, business development and the ability to bring in clients. Candidates for the role of partner are also often asked about their client portfolio, as well as revenue generation and long-term strategy for the firm. It’s because law firms want to assess a potential partner’s commercial and management skills, as well as their legal knowledge, to try to discover whether the candidate fits in with the firm’s future plans.
Should I move as a partner?
There’s no one right answer to that. Deciding whether to move as a partner into a law firm is highly individual and depends on your career goals, client relationships and the opportunities offered by the new firm. If you are thinking of moving, you need to consider factors such as profit share, support for business development and the new firm’s ethos to make sure they fit with yours. A move may be beneficial if it provides better resources, stronger market positioning or the opportunity to grow professionally, however, it is also important to assess risks including long-term stability.
