Over the last twenty years the Origin Legal international team have helped hundreds of lawyers to find roles in over thirty jurisdictions worldwide. This doesn’t happen by chance, and it doesn’t happen by taking shortcuts. Our methods are tried and tested, and they work.

We operate globally but naturally we have strength in certain markets. Onshore our focus is on the international offices of UK and US law firms, primarily in the Middle East and Asia, but also in key developing markets such as Africa. We also have excellent contacts with key firms in Australia and New Zealand.

Our specialist experience in the offshore legal sector is among the best in class. You will have access to our network of contacts spanning virtually every major firm across every key location in the offshore world; Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey.

You will find our approach is straightforward and ethical. We listen, we advise, and in collaboration with you, we come up with a strategy to maximise your potential opportunities. It is confidential and consultative, and always built on a positive long-term working partnership.

We aim to provide comprehensive support at every stage from preliminary research to start date and beyond. From school provision or visas, to what to pack and booking flights, we will have the answers (or if we don’t, we will know someone who does!)

Our network of contacts is truly global and we routinely conduct multi-jurisdictional searches. We work at all levels from NQ to senior Equity Partner across our core markets: 

Offshore: Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, and Jersey, and the offices of offshore law firms in Europe and Asia.

Onshore: International offices of UK and US law firms. We have recruited into around thirty jurisdictions worldwide but with a focus on the Middle East, Asia and Australasia. We also have experience of recruiting into some of the world’s key developing markets.

We employ the full range of recruitment methodology, spanning global advertising and social media campaigns, a full suite of resources and editorials, and the use of direct search and selection when appropriate. The key to our approach is the ability to develop productive, long-term working relationships. Is a move to an offshore law firm right for you?

I say it every day “Offshore is a brilliant move for the right person” but of course the real question is “who is the right person?”

My advice is to consider it on two levels; the professional and the personal.

Professionally, you will need to be comfortable in smaller teams and excited about the exposure that comes with that. You’ll be client-facing from the outset, and there’s nowhere to hide. Perfect if you crave responsibility but if you prefer the comfort of a large group, think twice.

You also need to be adaptable. The work offshore requires strong technical skills but is also broader. If you enjoy variety and juggling multiple matters, you’ll thrive. If you prefer something more predictable, perhaps not.

Personally, think about life on a small island. The standard of living offshore is very high, and when you’re stuck at your desk in the Square Mile, crawling along the M6, or filling out your tax-return, island life sounds great.

But ask yourself the important questions. Can you live without Selfridges or a Tesco Metro on the corner? Will you miss an abundance of galleries, nightclubs or restaurant choices? Does a more relaxed outdoor lifestyle make up for the trade-offs? And if you have an eye on the Caribbean, are you sure you’re ready for the heat?

Then there’s distance. If you’ve never lived away from family or friends, how will you handle the separation? Being an hour away in Jersey is one thing; the best part of a day’s travel away in BVI perhaps another.
